The red-mantled rosefinch is about as large as a hawfinch, 18 centimetres long. It stands out for a strong bill and looks like a larger edition of the pink-browed rosefinch. In the nominate form the male's wing length is about 86–91 millimetres and the female's 88–92, with the tail 69–74 millimetres in males and 65–70 in females. The 14.5–15 millimetre bill is strong, with a deep base and a rounded culmen; the upper mandible is brownish and the lower yellowish horn-coloured. The legs are fleshy brown.
