Basic stats

Habitat

Bare high mountain regions

Range

The Caucasus and Central Asia through the Himalaya to western and northwestern China

Size

19–20cm

The great rosefinch is a rather large rosefinch, 19–20 centimetres long and larger than a hawfinch. The horn-coloured bill is strong with a fine tip, and the breast looks powerful both on a perched and a flying bird. The wings and tail look relatively long. Flight is powerful, in elongated, deep waves, and the flight silhouette sometimes recalls a thrush or a large lark. (German Wikipedia, general species account)

The wing length is 113.5–121.5 millimetres in males and 105–112.5 in females, and the tail is 83–92 millimetres. The sexes differ clearly in plumage colour. It inhabits bare high-mountain regions in the Caucasus and from Central Asia through the Himalaya to western and northwestern China. (German Wikipedia, general species account)
