Breeds in Europe, the western Palearctic and North Africa

The common linnet is a slim bird with a long tail. The upperparts are brown, the throat sullied white and the bill grey. The summer male has a grey nape, a red head patch and a red breast. Females and young birds lack the red and have white underparts with a buff-streaked breast. The common name and the scientific name Linaria come from its fondness for hemp and flax seeds, flax being the plant that linen is made from. (Wikipedia, general species account)

The linnet breeds in Europe, the western Palearctic and North Africa. It is partially resident, but many eastern and northern birds migrate farther south within the breeding range or move to the coasts, and they are sometimes found several hundred miles offshore. It has been introduced to the Dominican Republic. (Wikipedia, general species account)
