The pine grosbeak is one of the largest true finches, 20–25.5 centimetres long with a wingspan of about 33 centimetres and a weight of 52–78 grams, averaging 56.4 grams. Adults have a long forked black tail, black wings with white wing bars and a large bill. The wing chord is 10.2–11.6 centimetres, the tail 7.8–9.5 centimetres and the bill 1.4–1.65 centimetres. It is the only species in its genus. (Wikipedia, general species account)
It is found in coniferous woods across Alaska, the western mountains of the United States and Canada, and in subarctic Fennoscandia and across the Palearctic to Siberia. The species is a frugivore, especially in winter, favouring small fruits such as rowans. Because fruit crops vary from year to year, the pine grosbeak is one of many subarctic-resident birds that show irruptive behaviour. (Wikipedia, general species account)
