The Asian rosy finch is a stout, dark brown finch. Males across most of the species' range have black faces and throats, with wings and flanks suffused with a pinkish hue; the Yakutian subspecies departs from this, showing deeper brown wings with no trace of pink. Females lack the pink and look paler on the face and throat than males. Five subspecies are listed, including sushkini in northern Mongolia (the Khangai region) and cognata in the Sayan Mountains and adjacent mountains on the Russia-Mongolia border. It breeds in Mongolia and the East Palearctic and winters in Manchuria, Korea, Sakhalin and Japan. Its natural habitats are tundra and temperate grassland. The other subspecies occupy the Russian Altai, the mountains of East Siberia from the Lena River to Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands, and the mountains north of Lake Baikal.
