The European goldfinch is 12–13 centimetres long, with a wingspan of 21–25 centimetres and a weight of 14–19 grams. Both sexes have a red face, a black-and-white head, warm brown upperparts, white underparts with buff flanks and breast patches, and black wings with a broad yellow bar, a black tail and a white rump. Males can often be told on close inspection by a larger, darker red mask that extends just behind the eye and by black shoulder feathers, whereas the female's are brown. The female's red face does not extend past the eye. (Wikipedia, general species account)
