The rustic bunting is fairly strongly coloured and easy to tell from other species, though it has similarities to the reed bunting. It is brownish above with dark streaks. The male's head is black with a white supercilium and white throat; the female's head is brown-spotted rather than black. The head feathers form a visible crest, unique among buntings, and the nape, breast and flanks are reddish-brown. It is about 15 centimetres long and weighs 16–21 grams, with a wing length of 7.5–8.5 centimetres. (German Wikipedia, general species account)

It is a migrant. The summer ranges lie in northern latitudes, from Scandinavia across northern Russia to the Bering Strait, and the winter quarters in southern East Asia, in eastern China and Japan. It breeds by preference in damp boreal coniferous forests. (German Wikipedia, general species account)
