Pandion haliaetus
Diet
Almost entirely fish
Habitat
Coasts, rivers, lakes and wetlands with suitable nest sites
Range
All continents except Antarctica
The osprey is a large, long-winged raptor with dark brown upperparts and mostly pale head and underparts. A dark stripe crosses the eye, and the wings appear strongly angled in flight. It is the only living species in the genus Pandion and the sole member of its family in the traditional classification. Powerful feet, curved talons and other specialised features enable it to seize slippery prey, making its shape and hunting equipment distinct from those of most other fish-eating birds. (Wikipedia, general species account)
Fish make up almost the entire diet. An osprey circles or watches from a perch, then plunges feet-first into water to grasp prey. The species occupies many habitats provided that productive water and a suitable elevated nesting site are close together. It occurs on every continent except Antarctica, although South American birds are nonbreeding visitors. Eurasian populations range across the Palearctic and into southern Asia and Africa; many migrate, while birds in some warmer regions remain throughout the year. (Wikipedia, general species account)
