The great tit is widespread and common through Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia as far east as the Amur River, and generally resident in any sort of woodland. Most birds do not migrate except in extremely harsh winters. Fifteen subspecies are recognised, and the nominate P. m. major occurs across much of Europe and Asia Minor, northern and eastern Kazakhstan, southern Siberia and northern Mongolia as far as the mid-Amur Valley. Since 2005 the southern Asian and East Asian forms have been split off as separate species. (Wikipedia, general species account)
