Habitat
Temperate humid conifer forest
Range
Europe across Siberia and Mongolia to northeastern China
The coal tit is a small, restless tit with a glossy black head in adult plumage, contrasting white cheeks and a conspicuous pale nape patch. Its bill is black, legs lead-coloured and eyes dark brown. Juveniles are duller and lack the adult's glossy crown; their pale cheeks and nape are washed yellow. Feeding flocks keep in contact with repeated short calls, while the song is a rapid, high-pitched phrase reminiscent of a great tit but delivered faster and at a higher pitch. Coal tits are characteristic birds of temperate, humid conifer forest, though they can use other wooded habitats. The nominate subspecies ranges from continental Europe through Siberia and Mongolia to northeastern China. Most populations remain in their range year-round, while Siberian birds migrate more regularly. In winter they join mixed flocks with other tits and forage acrobatically, sometimes hopping along trunks like treecreepers. Their foods include beechmast and seeds extracted from fir and larch cones; they also feed in alder and birch and visit gardens for sunflower seeds. (Wikipedia, general species account)
