Eremias arguta
Diet
Mainly arthropods
Habitat
Steppe, semi-desert and sandy open ground
The steppe-runner is a medium-sized racerunner with a flattened body, pointed snout and long tapering tail. Its highly variable upperparts may be grey, olive or sandy brown, marked by pale stripes, dark blotches or eye-like spots. The underside is whitish. Long limbs permit rapid bursts over open ground. It resembles several other Eremias, and confident field identification may require scale details rather than relying on the variable dorsal pattern. (Wikipedia, Eremias arguta account)
This lizard uses sunny steppe, semi-desert and sandy or clay ground across eastern Europe and Central Asia. It is active by day, sheltering in burrows that it digs or occupies opportunistically. Beetles, grasshoppers, spiders and other small arthropods dominate the diet, and females deposit eggs in warm soil. The opened general account confirms a broad Asian distribution but offers no sufficiently precise Mongolian locality, population-specific breeding timing or visitor guidance.
