Lenok

Salmonidae

Brachymystax lenok

Lenok is a medium-to-large salmonid of Mongolia's cold rivers and lakes. It is widespread by national standards but assessed as vulnerable because fishing pressure and river degradation affect many populations. It has a thick, trout-like body, a blunt or pointed snout depending on form, small dark spots and a small adipose fin behind the dorsal fin.

It inhabits the Selenge, Orkhon, Tuul, Eg, Ider and other northern rivers, Lake Hovsgol and the Darkhad Depression, as well as eastern Amur-drainage rivers. Lenok take aquatic insects, crustaceans and small fish, moving into suitable flowing water to spawn. Cold clear waters around Lake Hovsgol, the Eg-Uur system and the Onon basin are established parts of its Mongolian range.
