Lake Osman

Leuciscidae

Oreoleuciscus angusticephalus

Lake osman, also called bigmouth osman, is a large predatory cyprinid endemic to Mongolia. It is a characteristic fish of the western closed-drainage lakes and is regionally vulnerable. It has an elongated, robust body, a broad head and a notably large terminal mouth. Adults are much heavier-bodied than small osman and other local minnows.

Confirmed waters include Khar Us, Khar, Nogoon, Khyargas, Achit, Tolbo and Uureg lakes in the Central Asian inland basin. Large individuals are active predators, taking fish and other aquatic prey. Spawning and feeding movements occur within connected lake and river habitats. Western Mongolia's Great Lakes Depression, especially Khar Us and Khyargas lakes, is the core area; observe through local researchers or responsible fishing guides.
