Thymallus nigrescens
Hovsgol grayling is found nowhere outside Mongolia. It is closely tied to Lake Hovsgol and the rivers that feed it, making it a flagship of the country's northern freshwater wildlife. The species has the grayling's prominent banner-like dorsal fin, a streamlined silver-grey body and dark spotting. Its restricted range is often the strongest identification clue.
Its entire known distribution is Lake Hovsgol and associated tributaries in northern Mongolia. Adults feed in the lake but depend on flowing tributaries for spawning. Seasonal concentration in these rivers makes the population especially sensitive to disturbance. Lake Hovsgol National Park is the only appropriate destination. Shore-based viewing is difficult, so local naturalists and research programs provide the best opportunities.
