Burbot

Lotidae

Lota lota

Burbot is the world's only freshwater member of the cod family and occupies Mongolia's cold northern and eastern waters. Its national status is data deficient, reflecting limited information rather than confirmed security. An elongated mottled body, broad flattened head, rounded tail and a single chin barbel make burbot unmistakable. The rear dorsal and anal fins are unusually long.

The species is associated with cold rivers and lakes in Mongolia's Arctic and Amur drainage systems. Mostly active at night, burbot hunt fish and bottom-dwelling prey. Unlike most freshwater fishes, they spawn during winter beneath or near ice. Northern river systems and cold lakes offer the best habitat, though its nocturnal, bottom-dwelling habits make casual sightings unlikely.
