Esox reichertii
The Amur pike is an eastern counterpart of the northern pike and belongs to the Amur drainage fauna shared by Mongolia, China and Russia. Mongolia's national assessment lists it as least concern. It is a long-bodied ambush predator with a flattened duck-bill snout, rear-set fins and pale spots on a darker body. This pattern helps distinguish it from northern pike.
In Mongolia it occurs in the Onon, Kherlen and Khalkhin rivers and in Buir Lake. It waits among aquatic vegetation or structure, then accelerates rapidly to seize fish. Spawning takes place in shallow flooded or vegetated margins. Buir Lake and the Khalkhin River in far eastern Mongolia are the most clearly documented destinations in its national range.
