Godlewski's bunting is a 17-centimetre bunting that closely resembles its near relative the rock bunting, with a streaked back, a rusty underside and a grey head with lengthwise stripes. It differs in having white wing bars, and the stripes on the head are chestnut rather than black. (Swedish Wikipedia, general species account)
It is found on scrubby, stony slopes in low mountains, also in ravines and often next to woodland. Outside the breeding season it lives mostly on seeds, especially grass seeds, while in summer it takes various invertebrates. In the northern part of its range most begin breeding from mid-June, though some not before late June. The scientific name honours Wiktor Godlewski, a Polish farmer and naturalist exiled to Siberia.
