Emberiza hortulana
Range
Eurasia
Size
16–17cm
Wingspan
23–29cm
The ortolan bunting is 16–17 centimetres long with a wingspan of 23–29 centimetres. In appearance and habits it much resembles its relative the yellowhammer but lacks that species' bright colouring: the ortolan's head, for instance, is greenish-grey instead of bright yellow. The song of the male resembles the yellowhammer's. It belongs to the bunting family, which most modern authors now separate from the finches. (Wikipedia, general species account)
The ortolan is a Eurasian bird. It is served in French cuisine, typically cooked and eaten whole, with diners traditionally covering their heads with a napkin or towel while eating it. It was so widely eaten that its French populations had dropped dangerously low by the 1990s. (Wikipedia, general species account)
