The saker falcon is a large hierofalcon, larger than the lanner and almost as large as the gyrfalcon, 45–57 centimetres long with a wingspan of 97–126 centimetres. Males weigh 730–990 grams and females 970–1,300 grams. It resembles a larger but browner gyrfalcon, and is larger and more heavily built than the lanner. Plumage is variable. Males and females are similar except in size, and young birds are alike but darker and more heavily streaked. The call is a sharp kiy-ee or a repeated kyak-kyak-kyak. The saker breeds from Central Europe east across the Palearctic to Manchuria and is a partial migrant: in Europe, for example, some juveniles migrate while adults are mostly resident. European and West Asian migrants winter in the Sahel, crossing the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula and Pakistan, where they are exposed to illegal trapping. Migratory birds from the Altai Mountains and east of them winter on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. (Wikipedia, general species account)
