The Kentish plover is a small wader weighing 40–44 grams, with pale underparts, a grey-brown back, dark legs and a dark bill. Breeding males carry a black forehead bar, dark ear patches, incomplete dark bands at the sides of the breast, and rufous colour on the crown and nape. Females are plainer and lack the strongest dark markings. The species was formerly placed in Charadrius but is now classified in Anarhynchus. (Wikipedia, general species account)
This plover occupies open shores of saline lakes and lagoons as well as coasts, dunes, marshes, semi-arid desert and tundra. Its nominate subspecies ranges through Central Asia to northern and central Mongolia. Some populations migrate, while others remain resident. Birds feed mainly on arthropods and other invertebrates, locating prey with a characteristic run-and-stop method. The nest is a shallow ground scrape lined or surrounded with shells, pebbles, grass and leaves, generally placed in open, moist sites with little dense vegetation. (Wikipedia, general species account)
