The ferruginous duck is a medium-sized diving duck, also called the ferruginous pochard or white-eyed pochard. The breeding male is rich, dark chestnut on the head, breast and flanks, with contrasting pure white undertail coverts, and in flight the white belly and underwing patch are visible. Females are duller and browner than males. The male has a yellow eye, while the female's eye is dark. (Wikipedia, general species account)

Native to the Palearctic, the species prefers quite shallow freshwater bodies with rich submerged and floating vegetation and dense stands of emergent vegetation on the margins. In some areas it will use saline or brackish pools or wetlands. On passage and in winter it also frequents coastal waters, inland seas and large, open lagoons. (Wikipedia, general species account)
