Mareca falcata
Range
Breeds in eastern Siberia, Mongolia, northeast China and Japan; winters in central China, southern Japan and Korea, occasionally south to Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos, and northern India
In breeding plumage the male falcated duck has strongly elongated scapular feathers that hang far over the rear back. Outside its immediate breeding territory it is a very quiet bird. The male gives a shrill, whistling tyu-tyu-vit and a soft uit-trrr, while the female has a rough quack. Until 2005 no sonograms of its calls had been published. It breeds in eastern Siberia, Mongolia, northeast China and Japan, and occurs only occasionally on the Kamchatka Peninsula. It winters in central China, southern Japan and Korea and occasionally reaches southern Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos, and the far north of India, where mostly females are seen. Records in central Europe are probably mostly escapes from captivity. (German Wikipedia, general species account)
