The Eurasian siskin is a small, short-tailed finch, 11–12.5 centimetres long with a wingspan of 20–23 centimetres, weighing 12–18 grams. The upperparts are greyish green and the underparts grey-streaked white, with black wings carrying a striking yellow wing bar and a black tail with yellow sides. The sexes differ: the male has a greyish-green back, yellow rump, yellowish breast, a black bib and a black cap, and two yellow patches on the head. Plumage colour distinguishes it from similar finches. (Wikipedia, general species account)
Also called the European siskin, common siskin or simply siskin, with older names including black-headed goldfinch, barley bird and aberdevine, it is very common throughout Europe and Eurosiberia. It lives in forested areas, in both coniferous and mixed woodland, where it feeds on seeds of all kinds, especially those of alder and conifers. (Wikipedia, general species account)
