The Eurasian wigeon is a dabbling duck 42–52 centimetres long with a wingspan of 71–80 centimetres, weighing 500–1,073 grams. The breeding male has grey flanks and back, a black rear end, a dark green speculum and a brilliant white patch on the upper wing, visible in flight or at rest, plus a pink breast, white belly and chestnut head with a creamy crown. In eclipse plumage the drake looks more like the female, which is light brown. The male's call is a distinctive whistle, the female's a low growl. (Wikipedia, general species account)
It breeds in the northernmost parts of Europe and the Palearctic and is strongly migratory, wintering further south in southern Asia and Africa. It is a bird of open wetlands such as wet grasslands or marshes with some taller vegetation, usually feeding by dabbling for plants or by grazing, which it does readily. It nests on the ground near water and under cover. Highly gregarious outside the breeding season, it forms large flocks. (Wikipedia, general species account)
