The pied harrier is a medium-sized raptor, 41–49 centimetres long; adult males weigh 265–325 grams and females 390–455 grams. The wings reach far down the tail but not past the tip. The male is black on the head, neck, back, breast and primaries and white on the forewing, rump and the rest of the underparts, with striking yellow eyes. The female resembles a Montagu's harrier: generally dark brown above and pale brown to white below with dark streaking, and a small white rump. It perches on reeds, posts or the ground, rarely on trees. (Wikipedia, general species account)

A migratory bird endemic to Asia, it ranges roughly from southern Siberia to the Philippines. It is named for the male's distinctive white and black colouring. Pied harriers are primarily solitary, though they sometimes form loose groups, and they mostly live in open country and eat small mammals. (Wikipedia, general species account)
