Sexual dimorphism is particularly apparent in Montagu's harrier plumage. Adult males are overall pale grey with black wingtips, and unlike other harriers they show characteristic black bands along the secondaries, above and below the wing, and rusty streaks on the belly and flanks. Adult females are broadly similar to the pallid and hen harriers, with mostly pale yellow-brown underparts, a belly with longitudinal stripes and spotted wing coverts.
