Temperate and boreal Eurasia

The Eurasian goshawk is a powerful forest hawk with broad, rounded wings and a long tail, a shape that supports rapid manoeuvring among trees. Adults have grey upperparts, finely barred pale underparts and a bold white eyebrow above a dark eye stripe. Juveniles are browner and show coarse vertical streaks below. Females are substantially larger than males. The species was formerly grouped with the American goshawk under the English name northern goshawk, but morphological and genetic evidence supported recognition of two species. (Wikipedia, general species account)

Eurasian goshawks occupy temperate and boreal woodland across a wide part of Eurasia, using forest for nesting while hunting both within trees and around openings. They take a varied range of medium-sized birds and mammals, captured in sudden, fast pursuits from concealed perches or low flight. Adults are generally territorial and inconspicuous outside display, so a brief flight across a clearing may be the most likely view. Large stick nests are built high in trees and may be reused or refurbished in later breeding seasons. (Wikipedia, general species account)
