Steppe, forest-steppe and river floodplains
The Mongolian toad is a squat, warty amphibian with prominent parotoid glands behind the eyes. Its grey, olive or brown back carries irregular darker blotches, often with a pale line down the spine; the underside is light and may be spotted. The eye has a horizontal pupil. It can resemble green toads, but pattern, call and locality are safer guides than colour alone, which changes with temperature and condition. (Wikipedia, Mongolian toad account)
Mongolian toads inhabit steppe, forest-steppe, floodplains, farmland and settlement margins in Mongolia and neighbouring East Asia. Adults hide by day and emerge in damp evening conditions to eat insects and other small invertebrates. Breeding occurs in shallow ponds, flooded depressions and quiet river margins, where females lay long strings of eggs. They overwinter underground below the frost line. The opened account supports Mongolia broadly but not a named viewing site or exact national breeding calendar. (Wikipedia, Mongolian toad account)
