A brood-parasitic cuckoo, it breeds from the Himalayas eastward to southern China and Taiwan and migrates to Southeast Asia and the Greater Sunda Islands for the winter. It was formerly known as the Oriental cuckoo and covered several subspecies over most of Asia, but in 2005 the group was shown to consist of three distinct lineages, the Himalayan, the Oriental proper and the Sunda cuckoo, now usually treated as separate species.
