The Eurasian wren is a very small insect-eating bird and the only member of the wren family found in the Old World. It has a very short tail that is often held erect, a short neck and a relatively long, thin bill. It is russet brown above and paler buff-brown below, overall finely barred darker, with a cream-buff supercilium. In English-speaking Europe it is commonly known simply as the wren. It occurs in Europe and across the Palearctic, including a belt of Asia from northern Iran and Afghanistan across to Japan, and in Eurasia and the Maghreb of Africa. This is a taxonomically complex bird, and 28 subspecies are currently accepted, from Iceland and the Scottish islands to continental Europe and Turkey. (Wikipedia, general species account)
