Reintroduced populations in Mongolia
The wild horse represented in Mongolia is Przewalski's horse, a stocky equid with a heavy head, short upright mane without a forelock, dun coat, pale muzzle, and dark lower legs. A dark dorsal stripe runs along the back. Its stocky build, stiff upright mane, and lack of the long falling mane typical of domestic horses are the most obvious field characters. (Smithsonian's National Zoo species account)
Przewalski's horses graze grasses and other steppe plants and live in social groups led by a stallion, while young males may form bachelor groups. The species completely disappeared from the wild before carefully managed captive-bred animals were reintroduced to Mongolia. Reintroduction sites include Hustai National Park, Great Gobi B, and Khomyn Tal. Visitors should observe at distance and follow reserve guidance. (Smithsonian's National Zoo; Hustai National Park)
