Two subspecies are recognised: the Slavonian grebe, which breeds in Eurasia, and the horned grebe, which breeds in North America. The Eurasian form is distributed over most of northern Europe and northern Asia, breeding from Iceland east to the Russian Far East, while the American form spans most of Canada and some of the United States. The species is described as relatively small and threatened. (Wikipedia, general species account)
