Size

21–22cm

The Eurasian three-toed woodpecker is 21–22 centimetres long. It has black wings and rump, white from the throat to the belly, white flanks with black bars, a white back barred with black, and a black tail whose white outer feathers are barred with black. The adult is black and white apart from the yellow crown of the male, and neither sex has any red feathers. (Wikipedia, general species account)

This medium-sized woodpecker, just a little smaller than the great spotted woodpecker, is found from northern Europe across northern Asia to Japan. Juveniles of both sexes have a yellow crown, so the yellow crown alone does not mark an adult male. (Wikipedia, general species account)
