Range
East Asia
Size
29–31cm
Weight
87.2–100g
The Chinese grey shrike is almost jay-sized and, with the closely related Sichuan shrike, split off only in 2010, the largest of the shrikes. It measures 29–31 centimetres, and its weight varies with condition and season from 87.2 to 100 grams. Male and female look alike and cannot be told apart in the field, and there is no colour dimorphism. Characteristic are the long tail and the sharply contrasting black, white and grey plumage; in flight the white wing patches across the primaries and secondaries and the white outer tail feathers are especially noticeable. Both the German common name and the scientific epithet refer to the long, graduated, wedge-shaped tail. A researcher cited in the article doubts the frequent claim that females are on average slightly larger and heavier than males. (German Wikipedia, general species account)
