The upperparts are plain olive-brown, with less olive on the short, rounded wings, and there is a short whitish supercilium between the base of the bill and the eye with a dusky stripe through the eye. The underparts are plain and off-white. (Wikipedia, general species account)

The species breeds across the Palearctic and winters in South Asia, and it has been expanding its range westwards in Europe. The song is variable, with harsh sounds such as ticks, chaks and churrs mixed with melodious whistles and mimicry. It belongs to the reed warbler family, which also includes the tree warblers.
