Gravel plains, dry basins and rugged ranges hold wild camels, argali, ibex and goitered gazelles, with lammergeiers and Cinereous vultures overhead. Distances are huge, so plan for long drives and patient scanning.
The glaciated Altai and the lakes of the far west are Mongolia's best country for snow leopards, snowcocks and wetland birds such as pelicans and swans.
Larch taiga, mountain lakes and forested ridges, from Khovsgol to the hills around Ulaanbaatar, hold moose, brown bears, musk deer, sable and forest birds such as capercaillie.
Hustai, the Orkhon Valley, Sukhbaatar and Mongol Daguur offer open grassland with wild horses, Mongolian gazelles, marmots, corsac foxes, raptors and migrating cranes.
